Pregnancy and Birth Support We Are Investing In

Pregnancy and Birth Support We Are Investing In

Finding the right physical and mental support during pregnancy and birth can be challenging.

I also want to note that it is a huge privilege to have access to a lot of these services and it may not be feasible for everyone.

In our case, we definitely budgeted and prioritized these items as they were important to Brendan and me.

Physical health:

✔️Chiropractor – I have a regular chiropractor that I go to but luckily they also have another doctor in the office that focuses on pregnant and postpartum. I actually had to see her one day when my chiropractor was on vacation for neck pain and she even gave me tips early on in terms of strengthing my hips. It’s crazy how many useful tools there are out there that no one tells you about. I didn’t even know there were chiropractors who specialized in pelvic floor health, pregnancy and postpartum until my chiropractor brought on another doctor. I would go more often but neither of us has insurance so I started going when I started showing to help with my hips, mobility and alignment.

✔️Massage – not as often as I would like but more so to help with pain management in my neck and shoulders since there is not much I can take to relieve it during pregnancy. Again we don’t have insurance or else I would legitimately go every week. I have extremely tight shoulders and neck and other injuries so it’s definitely something I can’t avoid. For us if it means not getting fancy nursery decor to focus on these health items then that is what we will invest in.

✔️Pelvic floor physiotherapy – I had a couple of people recommend this even if I wasn’t experiencing any issues during pregnancy so I scheduled my first appointment around 20 weeks and also plan on going after the baby is born to not only support giving birth but also recovery afterwards. I will keep you posted postpartum. Of course, a birth may not go to plan but assuming I have a vaginal birth without complications I am really hoping this helps and then also maintaining my pelvic floor health postpartum. I feel like a lot of women think they have to live with a leaky bladder and pain after birth when that is not the case.

General Birth Support:

✔️Doula – I have been working with the Dynamic Doulas who have not only provided amazing support during pregnancy but also will be there to support Brendan and me during the birth and also afterwards. They also had a prenatal class as part of the package I got. Another thing, assuming they can attend the birth in person, is to know there will be that support for both Brendan and me mentally during this process. Of course, having a midwife is great as well but having a doula means more 1:1 attention.

✔️Midwife(s) – We are lucky in Ontario that if you choose to work with a midwife, that it is covered under OHIP. I have been working with my main midwife as well as the “backup” midwives instead of an OB throughout my pregnancy and only have good things to say. They will of course be there for the birth and also do follow up visits afterwards. Although midwives are still trained pretty traditionally in Ontario they definitely come off as slightly more holistic and from what I have heard you get more answers and support from them versus some people I have talked to who have an OB and feel like they don’t get any time to ask questions. Even the staff at the office have been an amazing support to me and are able to answer some of my questions which I am truly grateful for.
