ARE YOU LIVING A LOW-TOXIC LIFE?

Let’s be real, it’s had to avoid toxins in today’s society with all the crazy products on the market, confusing marketing, the air we breathe and the food we eat. However, I am all about doing what we can to reduce toxins in our everyday life in order to reduce that toxic load on our bodies.

Before you get worried, I am not telling you to overhaul your entire life! I am by NO means perfect when it comes to this but I always recommend to my clients to start with one thing at a time. For example, when your shampoo runs out, replace it with a cleaner option, and when their dish soap runs out, consider swapping that for a cleaner option, and so on.

Why is it so important?

Toxic chemicals in our personal care and cleaning products may:
〰️irritate your skin
〰️overload the liver
〰️cause or contribute to hormonal imbalances. Some chemicals, particularly xenoestrogens can mimic estrogen in the body and lead to estrogen dominance and hormone imbalances.
〰️cause health issues including headaches, allergies, ADHD, and asthma
〰️links to more serious diseases such as cancer and Alzheimers. Studies have looked at the link of certain chemicals such as parabens to breast cancer and although studies have not made a direct correlation there is a lot of research looking at parabens and other chemicals and their link to breast cancer and other forms of cancer. This is partly to do with the hormone imbalances mentioned above but also because many chemicals found in personal care products are considered carcinogens such as triclosan.

Although there still needs to be a lot of research in this space and direct links to these ingredients to chronic illnesses, there is definitely some interesting work that has been done in this space.

Not sure where to start in terms of reducing toxins in your everyday life?

Here are some tips for common household items:

1. Reduce plastic where you can and/or look for BPA free containers, bottles, etc. This is a tricky one because plastic is everywhere but simple ways of doing this are utilizing glass mason jars which are relatively affordable and you may already have some from things like pasta sauces. I also recommend glass storage containers for your leftovers and meal prep which bonus – your food will stay fresher as well.

2. Look at what you cook in. I personally have some questionable frying pans ? but once they get to the point of no return I know I will be looking into ones that don’t contain toxic ingredients which can leach into your food – yuck!

3. Consider a water filtration system. Some are so good to the point they can take out key minerals so sometimes it may be helpful to add some trace minerals back into your water

4. Get rid of air refreshers and crazy scented candles

5. When some of your cleaning products run out, consider replacing them with cleaner options.

6. Change your laundry detergent and dryer sheets. I know some people love the smell of laundry but its crazy how much the scents can impact your health. I recently got a free sample for a popular mainstream laundry detergent and decided to use it and it instantly gave me a headache and I had to rewash my clothes ?

7. You can even add some houseplants which are great for filtering the air in your home!

Now,  I really wanted to focus more on personal care products because I feel like that is where a lot of us struggle.

We want the foaming shampoo and the scented perfumes, but is it really worth it?

Yes, using natural products can take some time to get use to but once you have used them for a bit you don’t even notice the change!


Your products may contain:


✖️aluminum
✖️triclosan
✖️phthalates
✖️parabens
✖️propylene glycol
✖️and these are just some of the main ones which don’t include potential artificial scents and colours


So where should you start?

〰️I always recommend changing to a natural deodorant because you are putting that right on your armpits where some lymph nodes are located. I personally love Routine deodorant which is why I carry it on my shop. It even comes with different levels of baking soda for those who are sensitive to it

〰️makeup is another area you can look at. Personally, I wear some products like mascara maybe a couple times a year so in that case I may just buy cheap stuff and get rid of it but for the stuff you use every day I would definitely recommend switching to natural options. And yes, there are great options on the market!

〰️ditch your crazy scented and foamy shampoo, conditioner and body washes and opt for something natural. I love Dr. Bronner’s as a body wash and also because you can dilute it in multiple ways so that you can use it for cleaning as well!

〰️mentrual products can be daunting but there are menstural cups and organic options. You may have to try a few options before you find something you like so don’t give up!

〰️body lotions, bath bombs, and everything else you can imagine, there is likely a great natural option!

This list could honestly go on and on but this is a great start! Again, you don’t have to be perfect but instead just making simple changes here and there.
